It requires "power" to steer the wireless beam. So the efficiency would be always lesser. However, if the transmitter is up in the sky and using uninterrupted solar radiation and beaming a pencil beam to the earth, then it is fantastic!

Honestly I don't understand why WPT is required for EV, cellphones or other applications like those. I think just where we cannot use wires, WPT should be brought into play. The most reasonable application so far is medical implants in which inductive WPT is widely used since two decades ago.
