I think one should. Cloud data center unlike other IT structures are highly resource consuming entities. Google, Microsoft, etc have thousands of servers in single data center. Google has 22+ data centers

Energy consumption of cloud data centers is as high as 1.6% of total US energy consumption according to a report dated 2006. It has most probably increased over the years. So energy sustainable cloud computing, energy proportional computing are very important research issues.
For sure energy efficienty is a question of reducing running costs and reducing the environmental footprint, as more energy needs demands more power generation plants, and these generates huge environment footprint.
Talking about energy generation, the cheaper sources (talking about MW cost), like hydropower and nuclear have big environmental impact, like flooding big areas destroying and changing the eco environment (Balbina example in Brazil, Nasser lake in Egipt, destroying ancient sites) and for nuclear the clear radiation risks (Fukushima example). Coal, also cheap source, but highly polluent. If we go to the environmental-friendly sources, like eolic and solar we have very high generation costs and they are not suitable as base energetic matrix as wind generation is sometimes random.
From the cost perspective, energy consists in one of the highest costs in Cloud Computing, and will grow as automation and IT orchestration reduces the manpower needed to operate big environments.
