But you know that on Saturn and Jupiter temperature and pressure is so large that synthesis phosphine is easier and it migrate to the higher parts of atmosphere. In Venus it is not the case.

This is an interesting finding but PH3 is detected in the upper atmosphere of Venus not on ground.

For Jupiter and Saturn they are gas giants and true, for life on Venus upper atmosphere problem is very interesting because Sara Seager paper did say about a potential habitable layer in the middle. But, I don't know if we can get really excited about this yet ! We need further evidence...

Yes the amount is high and at present it is difficult to explain this phenomenon based on chemical reactions only, especially in acidic environment of Venus where the phospahatine should disppeard fast.

As per my perspective, the Drake Equation could help since its a probabilistic argument to estimate the number of active, extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy. Although harsh and unfavourable conditions are persistent on Venus since years, its a surprise to find the clues of creation of life on Venus.

This question is still open. It´s important to define what you can´t know at your point of knowledge. I think many professional astrobiologists approach this question in a very optimistic way, because everything that we learned about life and planets so far gave us good hopes. However, there are still many steps in the process of Abiogenesis that we can´t fully explain yet, and especially can´t predict the propability. The holy grale of our generation would be the discovery of life in our own solarsystem with a spaceprobe. Enceladus, Europa, Mars, Venus, Titan, Ganymed, Callisto and some other more unlikely places are all good points to search. And when we find it it will change the history of humankind forever.

It would be even more tempting then detecting biosignatures in the atmospheres of exoplanets or radiowaves of highly intelligent species, because when we find a second tree of life in our own solar system, we can study it with labs and we don´t have the depressing communication barrier which is the speed of light.

I agree with you Leon. It will be amazing discovery and will change everything. A finding of microbes will be as important as structure of DNA or theory of evolution. But when we will find an inteligent life it will be even more important and it will change not only biology but entire human society including religion. It will be really great but probably also create a lot of problems.

First of all, it would be necessary to confirm the detection! For specialists of radioastronomy, this putative and tentative detection deserves more investigation.

A great scientist once said that "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." Venusian surface temperatures well exceed 700 K, and even at ~ 1 bar level (~ 49.5 km altitude), temperatures can reach 350 K, which is already almost hot enough to dissociate hydrogen bonds and prevent any form of life (as we know it). The phosphine also seems to be forming at around this height (if not a bit higher or lower) and Greaves et al. entertain how it could have been transported from the lower atmosphere. However, as I just mentioned, those lower atmospheric conditions would be too hot for life to have emerged .

Meteoritic phosphide fluxes are apparently not high enough to explain the phosphine concentrations either. Personally, I agree with the view that some poorly-understood abiotic process is responsible for phosphine production. We should know more in the months and years to come (and with possible planned Venus missions). So, there is much to be skeptical about regarding how much this discovery is really connected to life outside of our planet.

If I were still active and placing a bet on what to work on next, I would choose finding an abiogenic mechanism for the phosphine rather than looking for organisms. OK, sometimes the long shot wins, but I think mine is the safer bet.

Even on the off-chance that this is life (which is quite improbable in my view),we'd STILL have to determine that it did not originally come from Earth.

Piotr Rzymski yes it is interesting finding that, especially in the past Mars was similar to Earth with atmosphere, ocean, lakes ete... It is possible that some organisms from the past survived in these underground lakes, even if they are extremaly salty. Organisms, e.g. microbes can possibly live in such lakes especially that had a lot of time to adopt. It would be very interesting to look into this lakes with the microscope.

Łukasz Kaczmarek Yes, you are right, however considering the vase-shaped testate amoebae from the Neoproterozoic Era found in the Chuar Group, Grand Canyon we might expect at least similar phenotypes. I am just speculating as the recipe for the life on the other planet might be completely different.
