There is a discrepancy between international universities regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence. For example, Hong Kong University prohibits any use of artificial intelligence without faculty approval. Meanwhile, Cambridge and Oxford University allow the use of artificial intelligence within certain regulations. The discrepancy in regulations regarding the use of artificial intelligence between universities will in the future lead to difficulties for a student completing their studies from a university that permits the use of artificial intelligence to one that rejects it. Artificial intelligence may have been used to write a master's thesis at a university that permits it. If the same student wanted to complete a doctorate at a university that rejects the use of artificial intelligence, I believe they would face admission challenges, given that they obtained their master's degree illegally.
I believe the consistency in standards would emerge as the use of generative evolves into a norm. As per my knowledge, the research community (publishers) has already developed common grounds for its. There is no reason that the academic institutions would not follow suit. One thing is for sure: the use of generative AI for academic work cannot be completely stopped or ignored.
The current situation regarding artificial intelligence takes me back to the time when calculators began to be used to perform mathematical operations. It was a paradigm shift, and there was a stir in all educational settings.
I think that with time, the position this tool will occupy will become clearer. Because, after all, it is a calculating tool.
Great thoughts and the fact that AI is a form of human consumable requires it to have some standards to it and norms. We are seeing a surge increase in many AI tools and every industry is becoming AI-powered. Students and or academics should not be left out of this boom. There can only be a controlled use of it and better teaching practices to educate pupils on how to use it. That way and when used properly would be more meaningful.
