Do you think the primary role of schooling has become human domestication?
There is a line of reasoning that says schooling is no longer designed to teach any particular thing.
Schooling (now available to almost everybody) is no longer distinguishing.
And, it does not do much for most people in the way of job training.
Schooling's primary function today is that of: Teaching behavioral control..
If a male or female can be made to sit in a chair for hours on end, for day upon day, month upon month, and year upon year - from wee early childhood unto adulthood - completing any and all assignments on command that they may find of little interest or value ...
By the time they graduate, they will be ready to be trained for any social position or any labor function.
The real thing every student acquires with schooling today is not mental enlightenment, but learning to control their behavior so that they might conform to the norms of society.
Of course "conform to the norms of society", as Stephen Martin Fritz says, is one of the main goals of schooling... and it has to be so! After all, we live in a society and living in society implies certain rules that must be learned (not only in school, of course). We could argue about which these rule are (or should be).
On the other hand, Stephen Martin Fritz alsos says that school "does not do much for most people in the way of job training". I agree, but I do not think school should be that anyway.
And, finally, there are many many schools that do not imply "sit in a chair for hours on end, for day upon day, month upon month, and year upon year".
so, all in all, I do not share this pesimistic point of view.
