Maybe no longer very good, but still good

Teaching expertise is the result of intelligent adaptations to specific circumstances. When circumstances change, a teacher will no longer be able to use some of the expertise he or she has acquired. For other new requirements, he/she has not yet developed the necessary expertise.

The change to an online teaching format is a radical change of circumstances. In this respect, it is plausible (or if you prefer the words: rational and logical) that a decline must happen especially among very good teachers compared to face-to-face teaching.

To be distinguished from this decline is a possible drop in comparison with other teachers. On the one hand, the very good teacher will, after all, be able to use some of his or her expertise for face-to-face teaching even when switching to online teaching. This will still give him or her an edge in those particular teaching skills. However, other of his or her teaching skills may now even be dysfunctional, but the teacher may not know that at the beginning. He or she has to try this out first, what still works. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that the still functional skills predominate.

Another aspect is important. Among previously lower performing teachers under face-to-face conditions, some may now bring a skill set that makes the transition to online teaching easier for them. The most obvious are digital skills with new teaching technologies. These teachers will be able to improve their relative position in teaching expertise as a result.

Let me summarize in two points: 1) A very good teacher under face-to-face conditions will be less effective under online conditions. However, he/she will still probably be a pretty good teacher. 2) Compared to other teachers, he/she will lose some of his/her advantage, but of course not completely. Even in relative comparison, she will still be quite good.

can't say I've observed among my colleagues such dramatic changes in students' viewpoints of them. instead I've been struck by faculty who thought they would never teach online and would not be good at it and who now are discovering they can and even enjoy some aspects of the experience. I think a lot of that is down to the training and support that was provided, a willingness to try something new and a genuine concern to support the education of their students during the pandemic.

To the prior points: good teachers remain good and we all benefit from occassionally having to rethink our approach to teaching and not resting on what we have done before... but it has been a challenge

One of the characteristics of living organisms like humans is capable of adapting to their environment whether it is harsh or conducive. Same with non-techno savvy teachers but in their own fields they are experts. Teachers knew already that learning is a continuous process, if they stop learning and coping with technology then they are considered dead, right?. However, if teachers are receptive, willing to learn more, engage themselves with things that are demanded by time and necessity then they must undergo the processes. I don't think so if before the institution will implement such digitalization in teaching will not conduct series of training, seminars, workshops, etc to equip their teachers especially those who are not into technology or traditional teachers. In my point of view, this might be a harsh opinion but the truth hurts. If they will not adapt then they should retire to give chances to the new generation.

I think this digital environment is indeed highlighting some of the gaps in the 'traditional' educators. There are persons who are highly opposed to the use of technology and do not engage in any professional development to upgrade their skills. This doesn't go unnoticed by our clients.

However, the word 'education' as we all know is continuous in nature, this also mean that as an educator, one has to adopt the spirit of continuity. Change is one of the things that is constant.

Though, a traditional teacher will still probably be a reliable resource but he/she will definitely lose some of the credits and or prestiges of being a techno-savvy teacher if and only if he/she does not link his/her teaching with this contemporary time happenings.

On this position, both non techno-savvy and techno-savvy teachers are good in one way or the other i.e. some teachers do well in online teaching than in physical class room and vice versa.

Nevertheless, It is important to say that we (teachers) all have to adapt to the revolving world of technology.
