I prefer text book method in College and University teaching.
But that doesn't mean that the students are instructed to be confined within the text book .
Text book gives a direction so that the students don't get puzzled . But whenever there is problem in following any portion of the text book, the students are needed to go through the reference books or articles for understanding and then back to the text book.
In this way, I think, the direction of reading as well as the habit and necessity of reference books and articles are well understood by the students without being puzzled.

Yes, the textbooks are important. Just as a carpenter may need a screwdriver or a hammer; the teacher and the learner also need tools. The textbook is one of the tools to get the job done. Thank you.
