Many academicians and researchers are busy in exploring new aspects of knowledge and innovation through research work and publications. But still there is a gap between research work and industrial application of research work. What do you think about usefulness of your research work for social or industrial benefit?
Research may be theoretical and / or with practical real life application. Some research work may be useful immediately due to practical application. Such research may be due to immediate necessity.
However, theoretical research: fundamental research are also very important since these may lead to development in future. Such research work may be futuristic.
As far as I know I think based on my experiences that if your research problem is based upon some societal or industry problems and you are focussed to provide solutions then somewhere you can say it has significant role for remarkable change in market, industry or organization. But still after completing research if your solutions are not applicable to industry then it is not useful. but yes it can guide other researcher for starting the research work again for solving that particular problem. If research is more focussed on innovation or new product development then there is more chances of applicability of that research in industry. But in NPD also not all products are suitable for commercial level production.
Therefore while doing research we should focus more on the applicability and usefulness of our research work by foreseeing the output of our work.

I believe this is a very important question, especially since nowadays it is becoming more and more important to show the impact of research for society in order to secure larger grants. Beyond the economic aspect, I believe the growth of data science is going to bridge more and more academia with industries but the focus will probably shift from pure programming and coding to algorithm development or research and development like in a research environment. There is also another perspective that should be brought it: the huge explosion of PhDs and higher trained professionals that academia is creating cannot be completely absorbed in universities. Hence, it is important to explore new opportunities also outside of standard research settings.
The ever lasting question. I may resume an answer like this:
1- Researchers introduce innovations, driven by: government (mainly) and industry.
2- Standardization bodies set specifications and applications solutions for innovations introduced.
3- The way is open now for industrial companies for competition in realizing products for standardized applications.
4- After marketing of new products, customers demand for more developed products, paving the way for researchers to innovate new solutions (item /1/ above). By this, the ring is closed.
