Dear colleagues,
I am from the newest EU member and PI in FP 7 grant. I also had experience as external EU H 2020 project expert validator. Nevertheless I have strong feeling that newer countries have less chance to get H 2020 grant, especially as project coordinators. I know that older (and richer) EU countries are scientifically more advanced but not so as disparity in funding. Even so isn’t H2020 here to overlap this gap, not broad it. I have some ideas why is that but I do not want to “pollute” your thoughts. I will share it with you if there will be interest in this subject. Maybe, this is only my subjective feeling but it worth to see yours thoughts.
Your idea is very interesting. Maybe it is do to the experiences on preparing succesful proposals and on ask about rules for the new calls. I am interested in to know your opinion.
Ireland, too, is very much under-represented in terms of successful H2020 funding, although we have found that it really depends upon the quality of your partners. Seeking out the acknowledged 'leaders' in the various fields, and asking for their input, is certainly the way to go. Having partners in Germany, Spain, Italy or the UK seems to be pretty much a necessary requirement if you want to have any hope of being successful.
There are some calls I have seen that specifically target inclusion of lower-income EU counties, but they are few and far between. I don't believe there is any real bias against recent EU entrants - the quality of the proposal in terms of meeting the requirements of the call, should always be the determining factor.
