During the last 7 to 10, years the growth in the various applications of nanotechnology in Medicine have been enormous. In 2009, during one of the nanomedicine conferences in Maryland which I attended, many of the medical doctors were not yet aware of the various types of nanoparticles that were either useful or harmful to people. Now, nanomaterial applications in medicine has seen more open acceptance and applications in medicine not only are nanomaterials used in drug delivery and diagnostics, these have found uses as scaffold for cell regeneration and culture of bone cells and other types of cells. Nanomaterials are also used as contrast agents for MRI.

One of the best possible application of nanotechnology in medicine is nanotheranostics. Not only could the nanomaterials be used for the diagnosis of a disease, it could be used to cure the disease at the same time.

There are hundreds of nanoenabled products for medical applications now which are commercially available. These include wound dressings, pregnancy test, HIV tests, cancer therapy drugs, and more.

Additionally, there has also been an increase in the use of nanomaterials that are made of natural components from plants or plant extracts. These are projected to impact the growth of the applications of nanotechnology in medicine.
