MCQs can only assess comprehension not production abilities of testees. higher order thinking skills like synthesis and analysis cannot be measured through MCQ's.
i think MCQ is great for "factual" knowledge but for Application skills or Social skills or "thinking outside of the box" its counterproductive, because the answers are limited to what the questioner had in mind.
Multiple Choice Questions have their obvious, and known limitations. They are not applicable to essay writing or open-ended questions, as they would lead the student or give the game away. However they are eminently suitable for testing that the student has mastered the application. E.g. Which tool would you use to ….. (A) ...(E).

Multiple choice questions have to be carefully crafted and also debugged before and after use to ensure that alternatives look equally likely. Also care has to be taken that cribbing does not take place (Head scratch = choose [a] etc).
Some of the students have problems with MCQs, they get confused although they have the knowledge. But generally they get used to MCQs and do better in the end. These questions are good for quick assessment in quizzes, but are supplemented with essay questions in exams.

Actually it depends on the addressing point of the questions. if it delivers the core of the subject matter, it can show that the students have something in their mind. But keep in mind that the questions should be conceptual, more critical and emblematic in all choice from A to D but not more than E.
