At the university I work electricity goes down once per year for a test and such "annual check" is said to be normal for bigger campuses. Even for labs that use only servers it is a painful two-day break, especially if you do some time-consuming machine learning, not speaking of biology labs which use freezers or fridges. As our campus is the biggest one in Japan (approximately 180 hectares) I was wondering if it is a thing outside Japan - do you have annual (scheduled) outages at your campus? Have you heard of such cases?

In our university, it is probably not the case. However, There are some reports showing there will be a power shortage at the universities like in Japan, USA (University of Oregon) and more.

Dear Rafal Rzepka, the case you describe could be related to the maintainence issue, which is a typical situation in universities and colleges. But, as Fatemeh Khozaei said, usually the administration sends the faculty a letter of the upcoming event, which helps them be ready for the event.
