Dear colleagues, for a research project we would like to estimate aboveground productivity or LAI of cropping systems including both tall crops and shorter row crops, or in interculture or in separated patches. There are different devices such as using hemispherical photography or sensor like Sunscan or LI-COR, do you have any experience with these? Or any other suggestions to estimate productivity or LAI in the field?

The LAI in such cases is two step strategy. One we want to measure the LAI of the system both of the tall and short crops grown as intercrop. Sunscan canopy analysis system can be used which works on the principles of Beers Law of radiation interception. First you place the sensor in canopy at the surface and record the data. Then you keep sensor on the top of the short crop which will estimate the LAI of the tall crop and subtracting the will segregate the LAI of both the crops for ech treatment. The readingsaid need to be repeated for more accuracy. I think it would give you some idea to explore more procedures.
