I am looking for a self-report measure of perceived racial discrimination with good reliability & validity. Publicly available would be ideal. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
This article reviews 4 measures of perceived discrimination:
Trasher AD, et al. Theory-guided selection of discrimination measures for racial/ethnic health disparities research among older adults. J Aging Health 2012; 24:1018-1043.
There is also a subscale measuring perceived discrimination related to health care in the Interpersonal Processes of Care scale. Stewart AL et al, Health Services Research 2007; 42:1235-1256.
You may want to look at the Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy (SEE). Here is the full citation:
Wang, Y., Davidson, M. M., Yakushko, O. F., Savoy, H. B., Tan, J. A., Bleier, J. K. (2003). The Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy: Development, validation, and reliability. Journal of Counseling Psychology, 50(2), 221-234. http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/0022-0167.50.2.221
Matthew Mayhew has done some good work measuring the climate surrounding diversity. One article that discusses the survey he uses is here:
Mayhew, M.J., Grunwald, H.E. & Dey, E.L. (2005). Curriculum Matters: Creating a Positive Climate for Diversity from the Student Perspective. Research in Higher Education, Vol. 46, No. 4 (Jun., 2005), pp. 389-412.
Parts of the survey address interactions with diverse peers and with diverse faculty,as well as experiences of discrimination.
