Psychological trauma or physical? Obviously the latter begets the other but I am studying psychological trauma in the treatment of medical trauma resuscitation. Let me know if that fits your needs.

From a DSM perspective, one must be careful in making sure that traumatized children have PTSD. The vast majority of traumatized children and adults do not develop the disorder. Given that evidence based treatments for PTSD typically involve exposure therapy (e.g., in vitro flooding) and as this induces distress, one has to be very careful in making sure if traumatized children really have PTSD before using these methods.

I am not aware of the development of a child structured DSM 5 based clinical interview for PTSD. Several DSM IV based child PTSD interviews have been developed such as the Children’s PTSD Inventory. I train our students to make DSM 5 based diagnoses unstructured clinical diagnoses that are based on the DSM 5 PTSD criteria. There must be very clear concordance between examiner questions and the DSM 5 criteria.

I think it is important to note that the DSM IV and DSM 5 do not make the distinction between types of traumatic events in making a diagnosis as long as the trauma is consistent with the DSM definitions of trauma.

There is considerable evidence regarding non-diagnostic tests that are very sensitive to the expression of PTSD in children and adolescents. Our case-control research that compared traumatized children with or without PTSD relative to controls determined that youth with PTSD had significantly higher levels of anxiety, depression, and misconduct. They also had significantly lower self-concept and verbal IQs. Traumatized cases without PTSD and controls were not significantly different. Clearly, PTSD and not trauma exposure alone was marked by increased psychiatric morbidity.

The tests that were very sensitive to the expression of PTSD and not trauma exposure without PTSD are:
