Even though several research studies have been conducted on Membrane-Action in structurally reinforced concrete slabs, mainly approximate Ultimate Strength Theories were predominantly developed. The reviewed research efforts have indicated “some uniqueness and difficulties” in incorporating Membrane-Action into the structural slab design. It has been my experience in designing these type of systems that Membrane-Action is “present” and will most definitely increase the Ultimate Load of the vast majority of these structurally reinforced concrete slab systems drastically. This also holds true, even if the Membrane-Action has not been considered in the design of this structural system.
Do you consider Membrane-Action in Slabs?
Experimental study by Lenschow and Sozen has indicated that load carrying capacity of slab is found more than the theoretical ultimate load due to membrane action. In case of restrained slab having all edges fixed the load carrying capacity is found to be more than two times ultimate load. However we still ignore the effect of membrane action and design slabs based on ultimate load using yield line theory.

In the case of a simply supported RCC two-way slabs, the membrane action is important only at large deflections. The membrane forces are induced in the slab after the yield line mechanism has formed. The tensile forces generated at the center of the slab are balanced by the compressive forces along the edges. These compressive forces have a benefit on the yield criterion and as a result, the load carrying capacity of the slab increases. Therefore, the membrane action in the structural design of concrete slabs should be considered.
