If we apply the ideas of Jean Baudrillard, academic teaching has become 'carnival' in its simulation of real learning and sharing knowledge has gone 'cannibal' as academics become transfixed by the spectacle of their own creation and consumption of journal articles. Something to talk about in the tea room at Uni this year...

I'm not familiar with Baudrillard's work but I do have a feeling that maximasation of publications is frequently in conflict with academic teaching, either because of the different skill sets involved or because of disproportioante time allocation.
I absolutely agree, especially in some European countries, where professors do not seem to be teaching anymore. And... nobody is reading them either.
Well, the post is so well written it feels like an answer is not needed anymore. I guess that's how an already converted listener feels when hearing a preach. This contribution is not saying much if only that you're not preaching in the desert Bryce. :-D
