Hi. We would like to ask for advice/suggestions with regards to our undergraduate thesis. We want to know if what we're planning to do is correct. The overview of our study is this: First we will compare 2 groups (pet owners vs non-pet owners) on one dependent variable (loneliness). Second, we also want to know whether attributes of the respondents i.e. age, gender, living arrangements (living with others/living alone) moderate the relationship between the IV and the DV. Is the relation of pet ownership to loneliness (whether strong or weak) more pronounced to male vs female, older vs younger people, living alone vs living with others. For the first part, we plan to run an independent t-test to compare the means of the group (pet owners vs non pet owners). For the second part, since it's a moderation analysis (age, gender, and living arrangements as moderating variables) we are confused if we should use ANOVA or the ordinal logistic regression. Based on what we've read online, ordinal regression is recommended, since our DV is continous/ranked (scored in a likert scale) and our IV is categorical (pet owners, non-pet owners). Our concern is, since our IV is pet ownership categorized as yes (pet owner) and no (non-pet owner). If we only want to know relation of pet ownership to loneliness in terms of age, gender, living arrang. (ex: are female pet owners more lonely than male), is that a moderation analysis? Do we also have to input the scores of non-pet owners in the statistical analysis with Anova or regression? We're still not sure what's the appropriate statistical test for the second part. Any ideas? You can also give us step-by-step process on how we'll present/do our statistical analyses to our paper, thank you so much! It will help a lot.
