Is it required to have an FAA certification to operate a UAV or Drone) if its for research purpose only. I know for educational and recreational purpose if UAV is less that .55lb, it's not required but does research come under education?
Also, what if I want to fly it indoors in a big lab environment, do you still need to be certified?
Are you talking about flying your drone in the US? It depends on the individual state & country
If one uses UAV for research, terrains that a UAV are not just over a recreational ground for UAV hobbyists. It seems to me that the answer is positive that we need a FAA license to fly any UAV. The license may be classified as domestic, research, or commercial use. In my opinion, UAV usages must be regulated as motor vehicles because drones pose danger to the public, but let not the ignore other advantages that drones can provide in many occasions/situations.
As for the indoor within a lab facility, I would say no, but safety will be an issue as in other safety regulations exist in a lab environment.
