Hi, in my opinion measuring frailty in cardiac rehabilitation patients is really important, you can have many informations on the prognosis of the intervention.
In 2017 the European Association of Preventive Cardiology made a call to action in order to promote the assessment of frailty in elderly patients entering cardiac rehabilitation programmes.
You can find it at this link: Article Frailty and cardiac rehabilitation: A call to action from th...
Thank you so much! Actually, I have already known this call and have done some research on frailty in CR myself, but I still think that we might have patients in CR that are kind of "chosen" and way too fit to be considered frail. The prevalence of frailty in CR is not that high, at least that's my research says. The "frail" patients we mean are often not referred to CR, but to Geriatric Rehabilitation centers in Germany or they don't attend a rehab program at all and go home, maybe get some level of care. But this could be different in other countries, I dont know. So this is what makes me doubt on the relevance of frailty in CR...
What is the age of the participants? Frailty is more prevalent in people 70-75+ and more prevalent younger people with conditions. I think it could be relevant, because these patients are at risk for this condition later on in life, since they have been affected by myocardial infarction.
Yes, it should be measured and handled because it may affect the geriatric patient's response to any treatment, management and rehabilitation. We can determine the degree and level of frailty by specific scales and measures . The predetermined prefrail state of geriatric patients can help in preventing the deterioration of the condition by following proper measures.
Hi, I have been a cardiac nurse in Texas and Nevada for 28 years. The majority of our patients are 65 and older. We do get a few "children" in the twenties usually for congenital issues, we get some 40-50"s . In the last couple of years we have been more proactive about sending patients to cardiac rehab. But, we are getting better at sending our post cardiac surgery as well as cardiac interventions to rehab. We also do a fair number of TAVR's who are generally elderly with a number of comorbidities Nevada is popular for retirees. Some are amazing healthy and active, but in large part this population has CHF, COPD, CHRONIC
KIDNEY DISEASE, OFTEN SMOKE, OFTEN OBESE AND DIABETIC. The Geriatric population may benefit from a separate rehab program and focus, but this is the population most in need of rehab. Right now I am doing my Gerontology course and this is a perfect time because we are looking at the frail elderly and what will need to be in place when the baby boomers start hitting 80. Research suggests that maintaining bone density with strengthing exercises, keeping a patient mobile is the best chance for a healthy elderly population!
PRISMA 7 is a self-reported measure designed to evaluate the extent of frailty in the older population and people with chronic conditions (Turner & Clegg, 2014).PRISMA 7 questionnaire is used to assess functional independence. Article Best practice guidelines for the management of frailty: A Br...
Frailty is a geriatric syndrome characterized by susceptibility, loss of physiological reserves, and decline in several physiological systems. The phenotypic model (primary frailty) and the deficit accumulation model (secondary frailty) have both been proposed and validated. Frailty has been found to have predictive significance for patients in several clinical contexts, including coronary artery disease, cardiac surgery, transvalvular aortic valve replacement, chronic heart failure, and left ventricular assist device implantation.
