In my view, the primary reason for attending a university should be for seeking knowledge, and its byproduct would be the certification. I mean a prime target on knowledge follows the official recognition made by certification. I think university students need to have intrinsic motivation to attend, and one such reason might be a real taste for knowledge. This does not mean certification is not important, but it could mean that certification should legitimize that knowledge in a credible form. That is why having a certificate is a valid reason to apply for a new job vacancy.
You right with your observation, however i think the approach to taching is causing the misconception of what the university stand for. The employeers view about univeristy business is also a concern. If you wull ever agreed with me
