Students are "famous" for asking for extensions to due dates on assignments and sometimes just violate the late submission policy. How are students dealt with when they violate the late submission policies in your academic departments?
"Extensions for submission is the dust on assignments the students want to 'rough it out' and assessors want to 'dust it out'."
So far this was only limited to extensions with attached request documents. Now this has further gone to limit them only to Pass. But currently couple of campuses here have overlaid an financial component added to it.
The students are not to be penalized but when the outcome of the study is to fulfill the qualification / course with evidence. The lack of understanding in student work / assessment modes is also at play - when not appearing for an formative assessment session integrated within the delivery is also taken as late submission.
Though there is late submission policy - this is inclusive rather exclusive. For today's paradigm change in students and assessment - one of the best practice is to avoid / reduce any violation in first place. The current set of rules as applied are strict so much so that even an "small academic misconduct" can lead to expel and put a student out of study.
An incident where student not so in agreement for charges as claimed by the faculty - who should the panel support? Student or Academics?
Well there is another point here - do strict policies reduce the violation rate or does it make academics panel strong enough to instigate charges / penalty on students.
The "Fairness" bit says that if there is a policy for late submission then there should be policy for "Assessment Timescale" the time given for the students to complete his work. The students are all not same in their ability, attitude, learning - where as the assessment may be the same from one cohort to another. Even we can see that the assessor is also same for a specific unit.
Could you be fair enough in late submission cases below:
While it is necessary to instill discipline in students as far as deadlines are concerned, this has to be done carefully. There are many reasons why a student fails to beat the deadline and this has to be analysed carefully. However, it may also be difficult to prove the genuity of every reason put forward for late submissions. In, my university, they encouraged early reporting, if one is disturbed or a formal later in case something beyond control happens causing one not to beat deadlines. A 5% deduction on the score is imposed on all late submissions. However, if one is too late, no submission is required unless a strong reason prevails, supported by formal letter.
