Social media portals are at certain stages of education, in some education systems used in the education of students on specific issues and according to the age of students.
But do they really help in the process of education or are they only teaching pedagogical help without significant impact on learning outcomes?

I think it would depend on the teacher as well.
Especially in this digital age, students will highly likely be exposed to social media, and if the teacher can use it well, it may result in significant learning outcomes.
For instance, the teacher may use it to set up a facebook group with his/her class and use that space to share videos, ideas and thoughts. If used well, it could lead to fruitful discussions among the students.
That being said, we would also need to consider the social economic status of the students, as some may not have access to computers or smart phones back home. This may result in the student being left out.
Overall, I think that social media is a good tool, that if used well, will be able to lead to significant impacts on learning.
Social media is part of peoples' life. By 'people' I mean learners as well. Younger or orlder learners.
Already many teachers tend to use social media in their work formally or informally. Networking, communicating with colleagues, learners etc.
I believe that as time goes by, more and more research on the role of social medial will be disseminated. This will give more insights and ideas.

When social media are used properly, they will certainly help in education and pedagogy

Social media helps study education but it is still very new. it is one of the many tool available.
personally I think that one would have to create an app to deliver the wanted pedagogical outcome.
