I am asking this because other animals do this such as chickens using gravel to help digest. I assume the sand is also coated with bacterial and algal feed sources that are important for nutrition.
MR. Nathan, I don't know much about that topic, but can the sand--where the sea cucumbers usually live; be analyzed in the laboratory? If yes, then maybe you could try that, to find out the constituents of the sand, and maybe find out that there is actually bacterial coatings and algal feed sources. Hope that helps sir Nathan. :)
