Closed institutes without students have a different work-environment than advanced teaching universities. How do they compare in impact of their respective research contributions?
The teaching aspect helps the researcher. You cannot explain something to students unless you understand it yourself! You can also use your students as research spies!
Research Institutes can concentrate on better funded research, without having to worry about student loads and pass rates, but are often geared to producing industrial results rather than scientific results.
Thanks! Doctoral students, if properly guided are a great young work-force in university research work quality and quantity. Institutes lack this pep and work-culture stagnates.
Agree with Ian ! I believe, research institutes with teaching are more vibrant and lively than pure research institutes but as Ian mentioned, they can concentrate more on research ! Each one has its own advantages :)
