Months ago, I chose to follow many people who I thought might be interesting to read (given my interests). Because some software, which monitors how many people a person is following, WAS DOWN, I was allowed to follow many hundreds of people beyond the LIMIT. The result: I am unable to follow anyone else -- for example: perhaps, you; otherwise I would follow those who follow me because I usually share a lot of their interests.
P.S. I tried to find good reasons to UNFOLLOW many of the people I follow, but cannot come up with good reasons to eliminate anywhere near the number I would have to unfollow. Perhaps I will continue to work on this.
The procedure is slightly different from what Joachim explains. For most participants in this research forum, the barrier is 5000. If your followers get close or cross the barrier, the software "allows you" to follow more than 5,000 people.
