From somewhere in my educational background, I absorbed the notion that data should ideally be normally distributed. However, I am increasingly coming to the view that this perception is mistaken.
Many statistics seem to be robust in the presence of nonnormality, and, in particular, the frequent preoccupation with normality, skewness, and kurtosis seems to be misplaced.
I would appreciate others' views about this. Might a bigger problem be outliers in the data?
