A quick search tells me that it's possible to synthesize, e.g. silanes in these ILs, but if you have an organosilicon compound in the IL and are wanting to examine its behavior, does the Si form a very strong interaction with the F of the fluorinated anion, enough to e.g., make the Si hypervalent or change its chemistry?
Amy, this is an interesting question. I am not aware of any report directly linking the two, however, synthesis of organosilicones have ben reported in presence of various ILs!
BF4 and PF6 anions are prone to acid catalyzed hydrolyzation. That means in water they can generate HF what would surely react with Si compounds. I am sure there are better options available. However, if you carefully dry all components it is worth a try.
Agree completely with Mr.Metlen, if you keep everything dry (and you are sure your ILs have not already some HF in them, cause they usually do) it might actually work.
Amy, you rather need to consider PF5, the real active species generated from PF6. BF4 is much more benign.
