I was looking into a way to determine the degree of sweeling of latex particles and I've found this paper in which this determination was performed by diluting the latex in a solution of a tensioactive (at critical micellar concentration) followed by the addition of some drops of the hydrophobic monomer. I don't get the surfactant's role in this case. In a medium containing micelles, monomer partition will occur between those micelles and the latex particles, won't it?

Thank you!
