Non-published recent research with D. Pilar Rodríguez (University of the Basque Country) has shown that European otter (Lutra lutra) feeds mostly on invasive North American signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus). However, in winter, the diet changes: it feeds mainly on some cyprinid fish.

Now, what we don´t know is whether otter makes an effective selection upon its prey, or if it just eats what it is abundant throughout the year (taking into account the low activity and density of crayfish in winter), behaving as a generalist predator.
