Water expands upon freezing due to the relative open structure formed because of hydrogen bridges (H-bonds between its molecules). What about other materials with similar secondary bonding? Does Polyethylene (similar H-bridge), for example, expand upon freezing?
Short answer: no. The hydrogen bridges in water are stronger than almost all other examples (F-H-F is one of the rare examples that is stronger).
Polyethylene does not have similar H-bridges, its bonds are basically unpolar so the bonding probably should not be classified as hydrogen bridges at all.

H bonds are special type of bonds form between H and F, Cl, O and N basically. Water (H2O) can have those as it contains H and O.
Polyethelye or most of the polymers have C and H atoms and there is no way of forming H bonding and cannot demonstrate such marvellous properties that the water and ammonia show.
