Does your institution offer training in conducting research in disaster or conflict settings? Does your institution have a specific protocol for fieldwork in disaster or conflict settings? We are interested in learning about experience in this realm such as (1) specific prerequisites as part of ethics board clearance; (2) training modules; (3) adaptation of ethics board review specifically for humanities and social science fieldwork. Hi Al. This is a very important step! We haven't got a specific one that is suitable for the rapid nature of humanitarian/emergency research. But there is a potential route for this that we haven't explore in the context of disaster research. It is called program approval, a kind of master thesis' program approval for coursework students. One application that applies for 3-4 years.
I heard like 7 years ago regarding NSF' policy on disaster readiness research. If such mechanism is in place, probably, ethics that shapes the research approvals might give us some insights.

Thanks for reply. It seems that 5 years ago there was momentum on this issue but I am trying to find tangible progress. I recall there were a few institutions, like WHO who looked at expedited review, generic protocols, and pre-approval. I also know Scott Flowers' module at Melbourne U on Fieldwork in Dangerous and Hostile Places as a good training course. I'm wondering/hoping there a few lessons out here on the internet that can provide good precedent.
It sounds like CDU has a pre-approval process that covers 3-4 years. I'll check out CDU website but if you have a link to this process, that would be grand!

The NHERI CONVERGE node Lori Peek at University of Colorado has been tasked with doing that on behalf of the NSF. Our StEER members http://steer.network have been gaining some training on project by project basis, through the IRB protocols but so far not specific to the natural hazard damage investigation
IIHS and TISS ran a Disaster Resilience Fellowship with a broad range of faculty last year, noting a convergence of DRM, DRR and SD, relevant for policy-makers, researchers and practitioners. Learning was conducted in field sites in North-East India.
