Did you know that Malaysian students often study in four different languages: Malay, English, Mandarin, and Tamil? While this reflects Malaysia’s multicultural richness, it also creates barriers. Research shows that students struggle academically when they’re expected to learn complex subjects in a second or third language (Gill 2005; Pandian & Ramiah 2010). As an EAL educator and graduate student, I see clear parallels with newcomer students in Canada. Multilingual learners thrive when schools support their identities, not just their test scores. Multilingualism isn’t a problem, it’s potential!
