At a glance, North American Late Pleistocene fauna has no specialized terrestrial scavengers, like hyenas in the Old World. Perhaps, the ecological niche of large scavengers was partially occupied by canids and ursids, but I wonder why North American Late Pleistocene ecosystems didn't support the ecological niche of a large terrestrial specialized scavenger?
