I am focusing mainly on the hydrogeological debate in the early modern period, and rural survey was a deeply connected topic (especially when it came to floods, droughts, and to the social, political, scientific, and economic effects these phenomena involved).

In Languedoc, I have noticed that the land surveyors who appeared in doing the public land registries of the communities were often structured in "cabinets", with other specialists of the land question.

Thus, it opens on e largest topic : the land experts and the land expertise in the rural spaces.

Notaries call especially on them, for example, to lead difficult inheritances or land sharings. Lords do the same for recalculating seigneurial taxes...

Their role is much more larger than we still believe today.

So it meets your own topics, in Southern French, where the subject of accessing water resources and sharing it, or leading it from a plot of land to another gets an enormous importance.

I include some information on the land surveyors in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the mid-sixteenth century in chapter 34 'Transformation' of my The Making of the Polish-Lithuanian Union, 1385-1569, vol. 1 of The Oxford History of Poland-Lithuania. (OUP, Oxford, 2015). The surveyors were central figures in the revolution in landholding known as the Voloka Reform; based on Polish, Lithuanian, Russian and Belarusian scholarship, I give certain biographical details, and consider their work.

Surveyors are not glamorous figures, but you are right: their work is crucial to an understanding of rural economies in this period, and they have been neglected.
