Commercial products generally starts to decompose before use, purification should be done before use, which means an additional workup step is to be done. Whenever you can buy, do it. Your research time is more valuable than doing routine synthesis, unless there is a problem with the finances. Buy multiple, small quantities (what you need for the synthesis) and store Below 5 C.

Diazonium salt reagents , it is better to synthesize freshly as it is not stable at ambient temperature.

Aryl diazonium salts are easily prepared from the corresponding aniline by diazotization of the amine function in the presence of a nitrite source (NaNO2, t-BuONO, i-AmONO) and an inorganic or organic acid (HCl, BF3.Et2O, HBF4, H2SO4, AcOH, RSO3H, etc). Diazonium salts can also be obtained by decomposition in an acid medium from the corresponding triazenes. An alternative diazotization method for poorly reactive anilines is the use of nitrosonium ions (NOCl, NOBF4, NOPF6, NOHSO4, NOOCOCF3). This method is rarely used because these ions have to be handled with care due to their high reactivity. In order to increase the stability of the diazonium salts, it is possible to vary the counter-ion. To do this, it is sufficient to choose an acid leading to a counter-ion that better stabilizes the diazonium salt. Thus, tetrafluoroborate and diazonium sulfonate salts are very good alternatives.

Dear Madelyn Kist I fully agree with Doufnoune RACHIDA Rachida and Madhukar Baburao Deshmukh in that diazonium salt should better be freshly prepared. Commercially available samples could already show some degree of decomposition. Time should not be a major factor, as the diazotization of aromatic amines is quite simple and straightforward and takes normally less than 1 hour.

Thanks everyone for your knowledgable input! I will talk this over with my PI, but since we care about accuracy and purity I think we will synthesize it with help from our organic faculty.
