Doesn't need a DC link and associated power electronic overheads. (It does require the PE associated with DFIG control.) Manufacture is not dependent on cost of PM materials. Efficiency can be brought very close to (1 - slip). Robust, as induction devices generally are. Can work with a wide range of turbine speed, as the DC link eliminates any frequency dependence on turbine speed. AC side control completely independent of the turbine side, since it involves an inverter. Because of the same reason, reactive power control at the point of power injection is better. Since the link is DC, stability is never an issue.

It is not difficult to list the advantages of both:

I think the choice for a specific configuration depends on points such as the above, and most importantly - economic analysis and payback. Both involve capital investment, after all !
So the cost of each kWh generated obviously the primary consideration.

Personally am in favor of PMSG on efficiency point of view & its usefulness in designing simpler topology wind systems.
