To calculate the toughness of a sample we have to integrate the area under stress strain curve. So the question is what will be the unit of the value of area (toughness) which we obtain after integrating the area under stress-strain curve? As the value of toughness is joule per cubic metre, so how should we convert the value of area to assign it the unit of joule per cubic metre? I have attached an image of the calculation of toughness after integrating the area under stress strain curve, kindly let me know what will be the value and unit of toughness from it.
You do not show the units on your graph. If you are measuring tensile stress and strain, then the instrument may have given you "load" for the y-axis and you measured delta-L on the x-axis. Using the starting length as L and the thickness and width you can calculate stress = load/area = N/mm2. Strain = deltaL/L (no units). The area under the curve is stress x strain. That gives the SI force unit of N/m2 which is pascals (Pa). Usually the toughness is listed as the energy SI unit of joules. So N/m2 = J/m3 because J = N-m. When you do all the calculation conversions you will probably get MPa or MJ/m3 for a hard material.
Hello, I have another question; how to calculate the work of rupture from the curve
I used AUC of stress strain curve and multiply it by the thinckness but I don't have thickness so I used thematerial denisty to get it so the equation was
Work of rupture = AUC (force-elongation) * denisty * length/ weight
Is it right to used this equation or what should I use
