it create a sense of discomfort in me when i see professors do not practice those things which they teach especially in the field of business management. Is it a common phenomenon? Prof Ajay K Jain,
The short answer is yes. Obviously the underpinning reasons are a doctoral thesis on their own but certainly in relation to my working environment. My area of research was stimulated by a similar observations. In healthcare we "spout" the mantra of interprofessional working and learning but the reality falls somewhat short and regrettably relies on minimum standard enforcement through codes of conduct. I have recently moved to my current university because they are making great strides to improve this.
Some management professors do not realise that they are part of a business too!
In the field of management theory and education, there is a marked difference between what is practical to use and what the theorists advocate.
In the field of engineering too, it takes time for the results of research to percolate into the syllabi and textbooks and to influence the next generation of lecturers and engineering students, and ultimately engineering practice. The technical solution may lie in Web-based 'delivery' of e-textbooks, however the ivy-clad universities have much inertia and are reacting slowly.
your concerns are very valid. it is a common problem across the countries and among the researchers.
you alone can not change such practices. so be careful of yourself and for your career. lets wait for the right time. this should be done by Professors.
Dear Researchers, I have noticed a gap between what we teach or do in research and our practices? Do you see some gaps in this direction?
Agreed with your observation. Not sure following can be some ways to bridge the gap:
Universities to embark more research based on practical requirement or real problem from workplace or industries.
Further collaboration between universities' academicians / researchers & industries / corporations to commercialize or implement those discoveries / R&D into marketplace or society.
Ensure doctoral students / researchers to implement the theory / theoretical framework that they'd discovered / developed before graduation.
