Sir, Momordica charantia L. (Bitter gourd): Cucurbitaceae has been extensively used in folk medicine as a remedy for diabetes. Blood sugar lowering action of the fresh juice or extract of the unripe fruit has been clearly established in both experimental and clinical studies (Khan, 1998; Ali et al., 1993; Srivastava et al., 1988, 1993; Karunanayake et al., 1990). M. charantia may stimulate insulin release and decrease hepatic glucose output. It also enhances the glucose utilization in the liver, utilization of insulin by peripheral tissue and decreases glucose absorption from intestine (Ahmad et al., 1999; Baldwa, et al., 1977; Sarkar et al. 1996; Srivastava, 1993; Akhtar, 1982; Welihinda et al. 1982, 1986; Khannan

and Jain, 1981). An insulin like protein polypeptide-P, isolated from M.

charantia fruit showed hypoglycemic effect and decrease of haemoglobin

Ale when injected in diabetic subjects (Baldwa et al., 1977, Ng et al., 1986).

Oral administration of a n-butanol fraction extract (30mg/kg) decreased the

blood glucose level by 34% at 3rd hour after administration and increased

glucose utilization (Sarkar et al, 1996; Higashino et al., 1992). In another

study serum gamma-glutamyl transferase and alkaline phosphatase concentrations were elevated following oral· administration of both the fruit and the seed extract (Tennekoon et al., 1994).

Besides Momordica charantia, there are other Cucurbitaceae plants such as Coccinia grandis (= Coccinia indica) and Momordica dioica that possess antidiabetic properties. The unripe fruits of these three plants are used as cooked vegetable in India.

In our Country Mexico, not exist, or exist few knowledge about this interesting plant. I´m collected it some years ago as weed in tropical places in the west mexican state of Michoacan. Also I´m review the literature published about the use of anothers wild plants as an antidiabetic possible solution.
