Is Always a challenge to Select a software for data analysis un reseach while some reviewers (during publication processus) think some of available softwares have limited fiability.
First of all SPSS means Statistical Packafe for Social Sciences. So, if you are not working in Social Science, I would not recommend its use.
I had good experience with STATA, very fast and solid. However, I ended learning R because it is free. R is not easy in comparison with SPSS, because it i a programming language designed by statistics with a limited Graphical User Interface (GUI). However, the R comunity is huge and you can find thousand of packages for anything https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/available_packages_by_name.html
Also, R was designed to provide easy bindings with Fortran, C and C++, which means that you can optimize your code. I have no experience with SAS and MATLAB.
R simulation and SAS versions are updated one with more precision and accurate. There are widely used around world by the researchers from agronomists to breeders for analysing complex designs. Analysis from any of these softwares could be accepted in all high impact journals.
I agree with Dr. Ibirra that SPSS is widely using by the social scientists.
