We have discussion in our institute about purchase of CI-600 Root Scanner and would like to know possible disadvantages of it. Is it problematic to install and use CI-600 Root Scanner in stony soil? Is it possible to distinquish tree roots from weed roots in the image? Some other warnings or suggestions?
CID can answer to apps in stony soil, if any. Root shape and color depends on species, and often only excavations at different times and distance can give a quantitative record even if it is desctructive, see Huguet refs or recent papers like http://jkv.50megs.com/Grant_roots.pdf
If you cannot get some feedbacks from other researchers who have used it, you should ask the company whether or not they can loan you a machine (usually used) for testing. Some companies offer this kind of service. They loan you for a week or two for you to test out. Just call them and ask whether they have this kind of service.
