I just came across an Open Source application called KNIME which has some serious potential for data mining and analysis, model generation, and possibly design of experiment applications. You can find it here:

It has some integration with R that I have not yet explored, and I have encountered a reference from someone integrating Eureqa (one of my favorite programs for curve fitting) into the project.
KNIME has a very intuitive GUI and good documentation- five minutes to install and run the first example program. One thing it provides that helps me with one of my personal great failings is that it provides a record of the path from data to results- all too often, by the time I get the results I am after, I have forgotten the details of the path I took! Looks like a very powerful tool.
Charles, while I haven't looked too thoughtfully at the main source of your post, I am glad you mentioned Eureqa. I had never heard of it before today and it is an amazing little program. Our lab group discusses what is a 'best-fit' equation and this program looks like it can help us justify our solutions. Thanks for the heads-up!
Edward- thanks for the link- Weka may actually be more powerful than Eureqa, from my cursory look at their documentation. I have downloaded it and will have a look at its capabilities. I would like to point out, however, that I have been running Eureqa in Wine on my Ubuntu box wwith no problems whatsoever. I also like the integration potential with Knime (although I am just beginning to work with Knime myself), and ultimately integration into R.
Hi Charles, I have uploaded an R client for Eureqa (http://r.eureqa.ivi.eu.com Linux, x86_64), so you might give it a try. I had no success to use it, although my R skills are really limited. :(
According to Weka - it has also integration to the major Java workflow management platforms (KNIME [1], RapidMiner [2], Taverna [3], interesting that Pipeline Pilot has no).

I haven't had a chance to play with your module yet- been overloaded with another project the past few days. Those are some interesting links- I think the RapidMiner might be most similar to KNIME, which I haven't had a chance to evaluate, either. Maybe this week I will have some time to explore these in more detail. Good to see you here- I think this is a very good web site for the technically-oriented...
