Currently, I am working with analysis of unburnt coal from marine sediments. I would like to ask what method should I follow to analyze unburnt coal?

To analyze unburnt coal, can I use total organic carbon (TOC), ash content and relate it to some parameters like TS in water? Though some literature would suggest to quantify PAH but we have a limited resources so I am trying to resort to a conventional yet reliable method if there is any.
