Probably you don't need a hot research area, instead try to find a good research problem where you can be a passionate researcher. If you discover an area with needs that nobody is paying attention you will have more chances to make impact with your work. If you feel confused, start reading, an easy way is to read magazines for students. In magazines you can read about different research areas but in an easy to understand language. I do believe that having a hot research subject is not enough, available facilities is much more impotent to lead your research into successful implementation with a validated results.

Check out your lab, funding capabilities as well as good supervisor in your university (term of good means he has graduate many research students). Then after, a future benefits of such a research area is very impotent.

Eventually, I recommend you to go through the simulation of mobile 5G enabling IOT applications.
