Can anyone suggest some papers on the current status of implementation of practical Massive MIMO (both sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave) and issues faced by it?
I think the product development in recent years has focused on reducing energy consumption and size/weight, as well as refining the algorithms to manage more traffic.
The mmWave implementations are said to be inefficient, e.g., in terms of heat dissipation. But the main issue seems to be the business case. The telecom operators in South Korea tried to build large-scale outdoor networks but failed to get decent performance, so the networks were closed down. We might see a second wave of mmWave deployments in indoor scenarios instead.
