I am trying to simulate crack propagation under mixed mode, I was able to simulate mode-1 crack propagation,
But while simulating(using XFem) the crack under mixed mode, due to load the elements are over lapping but the crack is not propagating (ref fig)
If I try cohesive elements the deletion is not happening (cohesive are helpful only for mode-1 kind of loading?)
If there is any reference is available mixed mode crack growth please suggest

As far as I know these are the following ways to do crack propagation in abaqus :
- Open nodes between elements along the mesh line (which imposes the direction of your crack opening)
- Determine the angle by which the maximum stresses develop and remesh after having propagated the crack
The problem you have is not related to the mechanics or the material behavior (to my knowledge), it is more related with mesh possibilities. This is why crack propagation is not trivial since depending on few hypotheses and interpretations you will make.

you can use cohesive contact instead of cohesive element easily but it's depend on your mesh size. you can define cohesive contact in interaction module.
In any case, you model ist highly problematic because it seems to show very strong hourglassing. (See getting started manual on that)

Cohesive elements can be used for mixed mode propagation as you can define the mode combination laws (such as BK, power law etc.) . Since you modelled mode 1 crack propagation, I am guessing that your mesh is getting distorted heavily under mixed mode.
Apart from the meshing, you should also cross check for cohesive element deletion, whether you have requested the output variable 'STATUS'. You could also check whether there is damage propagation in the cohesive element using the variable SDEG.
