I have studied a few books on Machine Learning and I believe the following book, by Machine Learning Group at the University of Waikato, is one of the best for Machine Learning:

"Data Mining:Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques".

They have also developed Data mining tool "Weka".

Another one is "Machine Learning" by Tom Mitchell. This is a little bit older but still holds its place.

Moreover it is better to attend some online courses from coursera.org and edx.org on Machine Learning. They not only teach the basics but also give some hands on experience on some tools. Among all these courses one which I found most interesting and helpful is "Machine Learning" by Andrew Ng on coursera.org as mentioned by Raymundo Cassani.

Thanks Raymundo Cassani, Sanjay Chakraborty,Saptarsi Goswami and Vinod Kumar Chauhan . I have begun to follow some webinars about ML provided by Mathworks/Matlab and now I'm going to read some preliminary introduction in one of the book suggested. Then,  as Vinod Kumar Chauhan, I'm going to attend the on-line course of Andrew Ng. I see that he is going to release a book of the lessons he will provide during this summer. Yes .. My vote for a great intro through Masters level book is still "Machine Learning" by "Tom M. Mitchell"
