Bulk capacitors are among the electronic components with lowest reliability and avoiding or reducing their values could meet the requirements regarding high reliability, as well as requirements concerning volume of a device.
The good candidates are interleaved DC-DC converter topologies where effective frequency to be filtered is n times higher than for single phase (n=1) topologies.
Total volume of the device may be bloated up instesad. The hope is in reduced overall volume of heat sinks since high input current is shared between n phases resulting in lower power losses. It all depends on targer power though.
