Peat, which is rich in organic matter, is alkali treated to synthesize humic substances with applications in soil as fertilizers. Is it possible to use dried domestic waste for similar products or would a biological route such as vermicomposting be a better solution?
I agree with the above response re Scale of production is important. Vermiculture is one route or addition of beneficial bacteria can be used to increase the rate of decomposition.

Earthworms are wonderful for their ability to produce humic materials highly stimulative to plant responses. For households or small farms worms can be procreated around a tree to provide shade for the worms. You can use lignocellulosic materials paper, coir, peat moss or straws can be good. Worms are dependent on Calcium and a neutral pH for best action. Add lime to acid materials to give a neutral pH. Material for decomposition should be no more 20 cm deep as not to promote excess temperatures from decomposition insulation. Water should be provided to be moist but not soppy. Garden scraps and manures can be added to lignocellulosic materials. If the lignocellosic material is coarsely ground it encourages a rapid feeding by the worms. If you have issues with birds a netting or tarp can be useful. I use a border of stones around my tree refuge and the stones give me a measure of depth and an additional refuge from birds. Worms love to hang out under rocks. Hope these suggestions will be useful for you.

I was thinking about a faster route than vermicomposting. My interest in humins is because of their chelating properties for heavy metals with likely applications in not just fertilizers but wastewater treatment. Since MSW is a big problem, I was wondering if we can use that as a source and alkali treatment would be much faster and cheaper to perform on a large scale.

Vermin-composting is actually a faster and viable method for bio-solids management. Investigation for finding solution for treatment of activated sludge using biotechnology of vermicompostimg was conducted for effluent treatment plant of Alembic Industries limited few years back while I was guiding Devang Prajapati for his M E Dissertation.
